Glazing in a fire door does a useful job: it lets people see through a door before they open it, which reduces collisions and helps people judge whether a route is safe. But fire-rated glazing is a specialised component, and getting it wrong is one of the more common ways a fire door quietly loses its certification.
This guide explains how fire glazing and vision panels work, why they have to be part of the tested doorset, and what to look for when you inspect one.
Like every other component of a fire door, glazing is only certified as part of the whole tested assembly. A doorset is tested with a specific glass type, in a specific size and position, held by specific beads and seals. Change any of those and you are outside the test.
This is why fire-rated glass is not interchangeable with ordinary glass, and why the size and position of a vision panel are not free choices. A panel that is larger than the tested maximum, or in a different place, is no longer the door that was certified.
Fire glazing is usually described by how it performs in a fire. Integrity, the E rating, means the glass holds back flames and hot gases. Insulation, the I rating, means it also limits the heat radiating through to the other side. Integrity-only glass can become extremely hot and radiate heat even while staying intact, which is a real concern on escape routes where people pass close to the glass. The specification for a given door should state what is required.
Fire-rated glass is normally marked, often etched into a corner, with the manufacturer and product reference. That marking is your evidence, in the same way a label or plug is evidence for the leaf.
The glass is held in place by glazing beads, and the system relies on the correct beads being used and properly fixed. Around the glass sits an intumescent glazing seal, which expands in heat to hold the glass in its frame as the surrounding timber moves. Beads of the wrong material, or missing or damaged glazing seals, undermine the panel even if the glass itself is sound.
Here is the single most important point. You cannot cut a new vision panel into an existing certified fire door on site. The certification covers the door as tested, and cutting an opening into the leaf is a structural modification that falls outside that certificate. The result is a door that may look improved but can no longer be relied upon to perform as rated.
If a vision panel is genuinely needed, the correct route is a door manufactured or modified under a certified process, with documentation to match, not a saw and a glazing kit on site.
When you inspect a glazed fire door, look for cracks, chips or scratches deep enough to weaken the glass, check that the glass carries an appropriate marking, confirm the beads are secure and undamaged, and check that the glazing seals are present and intact all the way round. Note anything that suggests the panel was added or altered after the door was made, such as fresh beads on an old door or saw marks. Record what you find with photographs so the next inspection has a baseline to compare against.
A glazed panel sits alongside the rest of the inspection: the gaps, the seals, the closer and the hardware. It is one more item on a thorough inspection checklist, not a separate exercise.
